The Cultural History Museum of Åland

On 18 May the International Museum Day took place and we took the opportunity to visit ​The Cultural History Museum of Åland that had open doors. It was quite a long time since Marcus and I have vistied to museum, and Chiara had never been there so we thought it would be nice.

We timed it with the family guidning, but that unfortunately didn't suit Chiara so good, so we only listen to that for a while, otherwise we mostly strolled around, and did the specific activities they had for children. You could do a special magnetic maze, build a lighthouse, play Connect Four and work in a small grocery shop. But the most fun is to find the mascot Kluris, who is placed at different places in the museum. Afterwards, I also learned that children (and probably adults as well) could listen to audio tracks that guide visitors through history. Unfortunately, we were not aware of this when we visited the museum, and the staff did not inform us about it either. To round off the visit, the children could build a jumping-jack figure depicting Kluris.

Overall, Åland Museum is a very nice, although fairly small, museum. It offers quite a few activities for children and presents history in an accessible way for older visitors. The guided tour was also interesting, although it was a bit too advanced for Chiara.

Den 18 maj firades Internationella museidagen, och vi passade då på att besöka Ålands kulturhistoriska museum som hade öppet hus. Det var ganska länge sedan Marcus och jag hade besökt museet, och Chiara hade aldrig varit där tidigare, så vi tyckte att det skulle vara trevligt att åka dit.

Vi planerade besöket så att det sammanföll med familjeguidningen, men den passade tyvärr inte Chiara särskilt bra, så vi lyssnade bara en kort stund. I stället strosade vi mest runt på egen hand och provade de aktiviteter som fanns för barn. Barnen kunde bland annat göra en särskild magnetisk labyrint, bygga en fyr, spela fyra i rad och testa på att jobba i en liten matbutik. Det allra roligaste var dock att leta efter museets maskot Kluris, som är placerad på olika ställen runt om i museet. Efteråt läste jag också att barn (och säkert även vuxna) kunde lyssna på ljudspår som guidar besökaren genom historien. Det var tyvärr något vi inte kände till när vi var där, och personalen informerade tyvärr inte heller om det. Som avslutning fick barnen också en sprattelgubbe, föreställandes Kluris.

På det stora hela är Ålands Museum ett väldigt fint, om än ganska litet museum, men rätt mycket aktiviteter för barn och lättillgänglig historia för äldre. Guidningen var också intressant, om än dock lite för avancerad för Chiara.
