A trip to Gothenburg's southern archipelago

Styrsö Tången

We hadn't really decided what we wanted to do in Gothenburg, but I have always loved the west coast. Since the weather was quite okay, we decided to take the closest place to Gotenburg that was by the seaside, Saltholmen, since we didn't have so much time.

While there we had to leave the car appr. kilometer from the harbour and walk the last part (you could also jump on the tram). It was a really nice walk along a street lined with big nice houses.

Once in the harbour we went to the ticket office to check when the boats were departing, how long the different ferries would take and what places they would go to. The woman in the ticket office was really helpful, and recommended to go to the island Styrsö and arrive at Tången, take a walk of around half an hour to Bratten and then departure from there.

This turned out to be a very good choice, since we really got to see a very beautiful island and the walk was very nice. The road passed a lot of beautiful wooden houses and it was very nice that no cars, except flatbed mopeds and golf carts, were allowed on the roads. All the islands in Gothenburg's southern archipelago are carfree and many of them are inhabited by people all year round.

I also decided to take an extra loop up to the highest point, Stora Rös, to be able to see across the island and the open sea. At the same time Chiara and Marcus went to a playground by the harbour and I arrived there well before the ferry was departing.

Vi hade egentligen inte bestämt vad vi ville göra i Göteborg, men jag har alltid älskat västkusten. Eftersom vädret var ganska bra bestämde vi oss för att åka till den närmaste platsen vid havet, Saltholmen, eftersom vi inte hade så mycket tid.

När vi kom dit fick vi parkera bilen ungefär en kilometer från hamnen och promenera den sista biten (det gick också att ta spårvagnen). Det blev en väldigt trevlig promenad längs en gata kantad av stora, vackra hus.

Väl nere i hamnen gick vi till biljettluckan för att ta reda på när båtarna avgick, hur lång tid de olika färjeturerna tog och vilka öar de gick till. Kvinnan i biljettkontoret var mycket hjälpsam och rekommenderade oss att ta färjan till Styrsö, gå av vid Tången, promenera ungefär en halvtimme till Bratten och sedan ta färjan tillbaka därifrån.

Det visade sig vara ett utmärkt val, eftersom vi verkligen fick uppleva en väldigt vacker ö. Promenaden var mycket fin och gick förbi mängder av charmiga trähus. Det var också skönt att bilar, förutom golfbilar och flakmopeder, inte var tillåtna på vägarna. Alla öar i Göteborgs södra skärgård är bilfria, och många av dem har fastboende året runt.

Jag passade också på att ta en extra sväng upp till öns högsta punkt, Stora Rös, för att få en fin utsikt över ön och det öppna havet. Under tiden gick Chiara och Marcus till lekplatsen vid hamnen, och jag hann tillbaka dit i god tid innan färjan skulle avgå.
